The Story Mode (ストーリーモード Sutōrī Mōdo) is a gameplay feature included in the Dreamcast version of Triggerheart Exelica and later included in Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced. The gameplay mechanics remains the same of those from the original Arcade, but with some elements to make a deeper emphasys on the game plot.

Story Mode Features[]

Triggerheart Exelica (Dreamcast)[]

In the Dreamcast version, the Story Mode consists of interruptions in certain parts of the game, where spoken dialogues were introduced, and a post-credits epilogue was included.

The Ending changes if the player used a continue or not. If the player was killed and used a continue, the game will unlock the "Normal Ending" which is based on the original arcade where the non-selected player dies (Example: If the player is using Exelica, Crueltear dies). However, if the player finished the game without using a continue, the game unlocks the "True Ending", where both Triggerhearts survive.

Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced[]

In Triggertheart Exelica Enhanced, the Story Mode was heavily improved, as the game includes a prologue featuring the use of Event CG cutscenes and some sound effects to create an atmosphere on the story (Example: "Sounds of the ocean" when the Triggerhearts are out of C'rna_dyne in both Exelica and Crueltear prologues.) There's new cutscenes before starting a level.

The gameplay pausing interruptions make their return, but unfortunately the game is interrupted more often. For example a boss battle is interrupted 5 times.

Curiosities[]

  • The Normal Ending route of the Dreamcast version lacks a Credits roll, while the True Ending includes a new sequence where the Triggerhearts are seen flying above the clouds. This was corrected in the PS2 "Enhanced" version by including the arcade staff roll.
  • Some elements of this mode were included on the main game of the XBOX Live Arcade version like the spoken dialogue with written lines and the continue-based ending routes. This re-made game was re-used as the "Arcade Mode" of Triggerheart Exelica Enhanced.
